The K&ESR
locomotives were all built by Hunslets. Works numbers are: No. 23, 3791 (built
1952), The performance was such that that the National Coal Board adopted the
Austerity as its standard design and Hunslets continued to build them for the
Board and others until 1964. By the time the final order was completed a total
of 484 Austerities had been built over 22 years. Some of the war-time
locomotives were also rebuilt, mainly for the NCB, and given new works numbers.
