The Lavender Line is part of
the former Lewes to Uckfield Railway opened in 1858. Between 1859 and 1922 the
line was part of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway network.
In 1923 ownership moved to Southern Railway and was nationalised in 1948
when it became part of British Railways Southern Region.
The
line was extensively used by local, London, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells
services, sadly the Beeching cuts and the hazardous bridges on the approach to
Lewes saw the line close in February 1969. The station at Isfield
is currently restored to early Southern Railways condition. A worthwhile
event for seeing this line at its best is the annual Steam Fair held in the
summer.
